New Zealand's fire service says there have been deaths after a powerful 6.3-magnitude earthquake in Christchurch, Radio New Zealand is reporting.The powerful tremor, which struck at 1251 on Tuesday (2351 GMT on Monday), caused widespread destruction in the city centre.
It was shallow, only 5km (3.1 miles) deep and centred only 10km (6.2 miles) south-east of the South Island city.
Christchurch Mayor Bob Parker said "there were scenes of great confusion".
The city of 370,000 people was hit by a 7.1-magnitude earthquake in September, causing widespread destruction.
Two people were seriously injured in that quake, and older buildings including some landmarks were destroyed.
There have been several aftershocks since last September's quake, with a 4.9 magnitude tremor hitting just after Christmas.
