Northern Constabulary said cordons were placed in part of the grounds of Raigmore hospital in Inverness, but the hospital was fully open.
It is understood a four-year-old girl's body was found at about 0300 GMT following a report to police on Tuesday night of two missing people.
The body was found shortly after one of the missing people was found safe.
Northern Constabulary said: "The death is being treated as suspicious and police are currently following a positive line of inquiry.
"Cordons are in place in the Raigmore area whilst investigations are carried out, but police would like to stress that Raigmore hospital is fully open."
